Football Season Moved to Spring

The VHSL adopted Model 3 this morning which means:

  • Winter sports first practice will be December 14th and the first game will be on December 28th. The winter season will end on February 20th.
  • Fall sports, including football, will start practice on February 15th and the first game will be March 1st. The fall season will end on May 1st.
  • Spring sports will start practice on April 12th and the first game will be April 26th. The spring season will end on June 26th.

I do believe model three gives us the best option to be able to play football this year. If school and sports were to be virtual or schools and sports were to be shut down because of a severe outbreak of COVID-19 we would very likely lose a significant portion of our season. The move to the spring will give us a chance to get back into the weight room when it is safe to do so and get into football drills including technique, position work and seven on seven to prepare for our season. Please keep an eye on this website or Twitter for updates.

I look forward to all of us being able to get back to real football work together again soon. There is much to be done. No matter what shape or form our season may take we will adapt to new safety guidlines and training schedules and my expectation is for us to have a great year.

UPDATE FROM FORGE FOOTBALL

Dear Football Families;

In the last 24 hours the VHSL has put out a lot of new information that leads me to believe that we may possibly start the season on time (July 30th) or close to it. The most recent statement said:

"Student athletes must submit the VHSL Physical form to their school's principal after May 1, 2020 to be a member of a VHSL program during the 2020-20201 school year. However, the Physical Form is NOT required for out of season workouts".

This means that student/athletes must submit a physical form before they can participate in a regular season practice. They do not have to have a physical form to participate in off season conditioning which we do not currently have a starting date for, but should begin soon.

You can obtain a VHSL Physical Form by clicking the "files" tab on the home page of this web site. This version will allow you to fill out the form online before printing and taking it to your  physician. Also there is a video with step by step instructions on how to fill out the form located under our "Eagle Vision" tab. .

Sincerely,

John Brown

Five Week Bodyweight Workout Starts Today

A five week bodyweight workout is now on Teambuildr. This is a great workout to do at home with the whole family, as much as you can do of course. If this is your first time working out or you haven't worked out in a while take it slow at first and only do what you can do. You'll definitely be sore and out of breath. Your heart rate will go up so just use good judgment.

The workout is grouped in supersets of three exercises. Finish each group before going to the next group. For example if you have group A of push-ups, sit-ups and jump squats and each are 3 sets of 15, do a set of push-ups rest for 45 seconds, do a set of sit-ups rest for 45 seconds, do a set of jump squats rest for 45 seconds then move to set 2. Finish group A then go to group B and so on. Wait one minute (or more if you need it) before you go to group B.

There is no need for any of team members to go to a public gym at this time. The workout can be done at home or in the yard, etc. Please encourage your son to login to Teambuildr, do the workout and do so safely. We have a tremendous coaching staff at Colonial Forge and when we get back to school and are allowed to start football workouts again we will have a plan in place and hit the ground running. If you have any questions please email me at brownjd@staffordschools.net.

Sincerely,

John Brown

5 Week Bodyweight Strength Training Program

Dear CForge Football Family,

Teambuildr is our online weight training platform that we use at school while we lift weights.  It has our team's workout on it and our team follows a different workout every day we lift.  Usually we have our normal barbell, dumbbell and weight room type lifts like bench press, squats, cleans, etc. that we do daily.  Due to the Coronavirus outbreak I have switched our entire football team to a five week bodyweight program that they can do right at home.  This workout will start after spring break on Monday, March 23rd.  Before the 23rd I will encourage our team to check in and save their workout on their phone every time they workout.  A bodyweight workout will more then suffice for the time we are out of school.  We will make up for the time we miss when we return.  I'm looking forward to getting out on the field with our team when we get back and getting to work, but until then I encourage our kids to follow rule #1 of our team rules; use good common sense and take care of yourself.  If you have any questions about Teambuildr please don't hesitate to email me at brownjd@staffordschools.net.

Sincerely,

John Brown

Nationally Acclaimed "Guiding the College-Bound Athlete" Coming to CF February 24th

The road to college for athletes is no longer lined with traditional mile markers. It used to be that batting averages, points per game or yards per carry paved the way for sports stars.  Nowadays, one more percentage is carrying more and more weight. It’s called the grade point average.

The days of athletes dreaming to “Be Like Mike” and parents’ dreams of having it pay for an education and a lucrative future for their child-student-athlete have vastly changed over the last generation or so. In fact, there is a lot more work to hitting a home run than just hitting home runs.

A seminar to prepare parents and athletes for the recruiting road ahead — complete with all its bumps — will be held on
MondayFebruary 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Colonial Forge H.S. auditorium.

“Guiding the College-Bound Athlete” will provide information and topics for every student-athlete in middle and high school and their parents to educate and prepare them for opportunities and careers after graduation.  Many student-athletes who aspire to play at the college level are not familiar with the ins and outs of academic requirements and eligibility as they need to be in order to pursue their goals.

“Guiding the College-Bound Athlete,” a program designed by Rick Wire, President of Dynamite Sports, a Pennsylvania-based corporation, is the father of 9 year NFL veteran Coy Wire.  This seminar will provide families with information about the availability of athletic scholarships and the realities of the college recruiting process.

According to his press release, Rick Wire found himself looking for answers when his then 8-year-old son, Coy, started talking about being a college football star. Wire hadn’t attended college himself and decided he had better start preparing for the future.  He questioned other parents who had been through the process, looking for pros and cons and ways to prepare financially.  In the end, his son Coy earned his scholarship to play football at Stanford University.  Then in 2002, Coy was drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills where he played for 6 seasons and then finished his career for the past 3 seasons as a captain and player rep with the Atlanta Falcons.

Rick used his study to become a speaker and expert in college athletics and its recruiting process.  Then he created the Dynamite Sports Educational Recruiting System, which combines academic preparation and athletic training with marketing and recruiting strategies to navigate through the process.  The plan provides direction to high school athletes and parents, and staff development training and resources to high school coaches and counselors to help all parties make knowledgeable choices and decisions in college athletics and recruiting.

Rick Wire will present an hour-long seminar
at 7:00 p.m. in the Colonial Forge H.S. auditorium. Interested participants are asked to come early, if possible, to receive a number of handouts and watch a POWERFUL pre-program video.

For information about Dynamite Sports, go to www.dynamitesports.com.

2019 Varsity/JV Summer Schedule

This is the schedule for summer JV and varsity practice. Practice starts on August 1st and at 7:30 am.  Starting the week of August 5th practices will be in the afternoon starting no earlier then 2:45.  Times can be changed due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances and will be relayed to the players and sent out via Twitter @infoforge as well as posted here. All players are expected to be on time each day. Players must weigh in before each practice and weigh out after practice in order to track hydration. Please ensure that your child is drinking plenty of water throughout the summer. After practice, please allow time for players to walk from the practice field, put their equipment away and weigh out. A good rule of thumb is to expect players to be ready to leave 15-20 minutes after practice. There will be times in the summer, especially at the beginning, that we will hand out additional practice items, fundraiser cards, etc., that will take a few extra minutes. Thank you all for your cooperation.
