When Bill Brown resigned as head coach of Colonial Forge Football back in December, nobody had to inquire if his son John (and current offensive coordinator) would apply to be his successor. The Brown family name is well known throughout Virginia High School football and the young Brown was ready to take the keys. On Tuesday night, the Stafford County School Board approved John Brown to be the next Head Football Coach pacing the sidelines at Eagles Stadium.
John Brown was an assistant for his dad at Hylton in the 90’s and left the head coaching position at Freedom-Woodbridge in 2006 to be an assistant to his dad at Forge. Together they have built a powerful program which has been on the cusp of a VA State Title the last few seasons.
I was a fan in the early years of Forge football and watched the Brown’s come in and build it from the ground up and into a program with talent both on the field and on the sidelines. A program working and becoming not only a program but a football family.
Speaking of family, in the summer of 2009 my family and the Browns crossed paths outside of the Colonial Forge environment. I purchased John Brown’s home in North Stafford and saw firsthand what football means to this guy. Two things I’ll always remember was when we were walking into the home with our realtor, I immediately noticed a book sitting on a shelf. It was titled “Patriot Reign: Bill Belichick, the Coaches and the Players who Built a Champion”. It was a book that confirmed to me that coaching football ran deep in John’s blood. Ironically since moving into that home, a copy of that book sits in a different bookshelf in my office.
The other thing I remember was on the real estate side of the things. My wife and I were all set to sign the plethora of paperwork involved in this type of transaction, but the Brown’s couldn’t meet us at the closing table. The Eagles had a scrimmage that day in Richmond and we all know that FOOTBALL take precedence over life in the summer/fall!
The announcement has been made, but don’t look for a lot of changes in the way the Eagles look in the 2018 campaign. Talk to anybody in the program and they all give the company line, “nothing is going to change”. Bill Brown will be on the staff and be in John’s old perch atop the press box on game days. Being an assistant, Bill won’t have to worry about the paperwork and administrative issues that took so much time away from coaching. His new gig will allow him to help work on the field, and enjoy a more relaxed role.
The Eagles house is STILL in order and the name on the mailbox STILL says BROWN!
