When you’ve dropped eight out of your last ten outings, including a 15 point loss to former Eagle bench boss Jason John and his Colgan Sharks, the Eagles were searching for a cure. On Monday night the GREEN found some relief in traveling to Mountain View and picking up a 58-38 win over the Wildcats.
Senior Jalen Willis led the “good guys” with 20 points including 4 from long range…So long that many of his rainbows were tracked by NASA. Dawson Hugo had 14 points in the paint for the Eagles and Kahlil Smalls had 11 including 2 “BULLS-EYES’ on the night.
A long standing point of emphasis for this program is for the players to draw offensive fouls on their opponents. On this night, this one could not have started any better as just 12 seconds into the contest Hugo was run over in the lane by the Cats sending the ball the other way on a player control foul. The Eagle bench leaped off the bench in support and the play set the tone for play.
The Eagles got the ball and Smalls drained a triple from beyond the left arc and Hugo followed on the next possession with a put back to put the Forge on top 5-0 just 46 seconds in. That drew the attention of Mountain View coach Kevin Brown who called a quick time out to talk it over.
The GREEN tallied on their next 4 trips down the floor on baskets by Dominic Williams, Willis, and Hugo and the Eagles jumped out to a 13-4 lead with 5:43 left in the first quarter. Strong court awareness and crisp passing was the Forge formula and when Smalls drained a BULLSEYE with 2:45 left, it stretched the Eagle lead to 20-12, drawing another Wildcat timeout.
Willis drained his first triple of the night arching it so high it came through the net wet but it game the Eagles a 23-16 lead at the end of the first.
The pace of the game slowed in the second stanza as the Wildcats actually outscored the visitors 8-7 in the stanza. The Forge was only up 25-21 with 3 minutes remaining in the half when they got another offensive foul call on the Cats. Again, the momentum was felt on the Eagle bench and Willis closed out the half with 5 points in the final 2:14, sending the Forge to the halftime locker room again 30-24.
The “good guys” went on a mini 9-2 run to begin the second half as Hugo and Willis combined for the early quarter scoring, forcing Brown to call another timeout with the Eagles on top 39-28 with 4:08 left. The Wildcats outscored the Eagles 8-7 in the second half of the stanza but the GREEN took a double digit lead into winning time at 46-36.
In the final quarter it was ALL Eagles as they held the home team to just 2 points in the quarter while dropping in a dozen themselves. Junior Shohn Downey opened the scoring for the Eagles in the final frame, and Sophomore Montice Lee closed it with just 41.2 seconds left in the contest giving the Eagles the 58-38 win, their 5th against a dozen losses.
The win send the Eagles on a high into Stafford on Friday night to take on the Indians at 7pm. The Forge looks to revenge a 58-47 loss to Stafford on the home hardwood back in the middle of December. The Eagles will return home on Friday night February 2nd (Senior Night) to for a return engagement with Mountain View @ 7pm.
