GIRLS BASKETBALL: DOWNS & EAGLES GO WILD ON THE CATS; 74-44

The Eagles routed the Mountain View Wildcats on the road on Monday night by a score of 74-44. Sophomore Cameren Downs led all scorers with 36 points, and Senior Jamise Shellington tossed in 13 in the win, their 13th on the campaign and raised their district mark to 9-0.

The start of this one was actually sort of close at the start with the visitors opening up an 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Again, Shellington started out the game EN FUEGO tossing eleven of her game total in the first 8 minutes.

In the second quarter the GREEN started to control play and open up their lead. Midway through the frame, the Forge lead grew to 10 when Downs drove to the tin and picked up the hoop and the harm giving the Eagles a 26-16 lead with 5:20 left until halftime. The lead grew on the next possession when Senior Mya Tino drained a “BULLS-EYE” from long range. That was followed up by back to back buckets from Freshman Jenna Grey giving the Forge a 33-16 lead with 3:55 left. Both teams traded baskets the rest of the frame and the GREEN took a 40-23 lead into the halftime locker room.

The start of the second half was ALL Eagles as they outscored the Wildcats 25-13 and Downs buried 21 points in the frame. The GREEN had a strong quarter on both ends of the floor not only scoring but also taking care of the ball. Only turning the ball over once in the stanza. They dominated the turnover battle in this one as well 23-8. Downs scored 13 four minutes of the quarter to give the Eagles a 65-36 cushion heading to “winning time”.

In the final frame, the play got a little choppy as the two teams took turns clanging shots, and the GREEN outscored the home team 9-8. Downs opened the Eagles scoring in the quarter with a bucket and closed the Forge scoring with a free throw with 1:46 left giving the “good gals” their final margin of victory.

The Eagles continue to march through the Commonwealth District and continue on the road on Friday night traveling to Stafford to take on the Indians @ 5:15pm. The GREEN will participate in the She Got Game Classic in Maryland on Saturday the 27th before closing out the home portion of their regular season schedule on Senior Night on Friday February 2nd against these same Wildcats. The Forge will close out the regular season on the road @ North Stafford on February 6th.
