GIRLS BASKETBALL: EAGLES ROLL OVER NORTH 58-28; REMAIN UNBEATEN IN DISTRICT

The return to life in the Commonwealth District has been a smooth transition for the girls so far this season. The GREEN has dominated the league as it prepares for another long post season run.

On Tuesday night the Eagles jumped out to a 14-7 lead on the visiting Wolverines, led by 15 points from Cameren Downs and getting six points quickly from Senior Jamise Shellington in the paint. The Eagles went on a strong 6-0 run during the initial frame, to jump out to a 12-2 advantage with just over 2 minutes in the quarter. “The game plan going in was not to get the ball into me, said Shellington post game. But they saw I was killing them on the boards.”

North Stafford junior Ali Smith provided all the points in the first quarter finishing with 11 points on the night, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

If you thought the GREEN WALL defense was strong in the first quarter, the Eagles stepped it up a notch before halftime. They outscored the Wolverines 14-6 in the second to head to the locker room with a 28-13 lead.

The second half gave Eagles coach Lashaun Cook a chance to get her bench some much deserved playing time, and they delivered, outscoring the visitors 18-9 in the frame to take a 46-22 lead going into “winning time.” An impressive 11-0 run by the Forge to start second half gave the “good gals” a 39-13 lead and left the Wolverines searching for that bus to take them back up Route 610.

The final frame started with a 3-point “BULLS-EYE” from freshman Ashlee Fortier just seconds in. She followed that act up shortly thereafter with a two free throws to put the Forge ahead 51-22 with 7:34 left in the contest. The remainder of the quarter was back and forth on both sides but was highlighted by another BOMB from Fortier who went NBN (Nothing but Nylon) on a shot from the top of the key to close out another Forge district win.

The Forge has no time to relax and re-live this one as they get right back to work at home on Friday night hosting the Riverbend Bears for a 7pm tip. The two teams got together back on December 5th with the Forge taking a 47-33 win in Spotsylvania County.
